For the past two years, almost every move I’ve made has been scrutinised by the watchful eyes of my son.
As the mum of an energetic toddler, I’m lucky if get to go to the toilet in peace at home, or drink a cup of tea before it goes cold. And even when my Little Dinosaur goes to sleep I’m stuck with toy cars littered across the carpet and the Paw Patrol theme song rattling around in my brain. Reading a book, having a sleep-in or enjoying a long, relaxing bubble bath are luxuries I’ve long forgotten about.
Don’t get me wrong, I love every inch of Hudson’s blond hair, blue eyes, chubby cheeks and mischievous smile. But it’s still nice to have the occasional break to recharge the batteries.
So heading away, solo, for a long weekend at Mount Roland Country Lodge was a pretty exciting prospect.
From the minute I pulled in to the driveway and saw Conrad the shaggy highland cow munching on grass in a paddock brimming with golden daffodils and rich red tulips, I knew I was going to love the place.
I took baths. LONG ones.
I read magazines, uninterrupted.
I went for walks, took photos and admired the resident geese, chooks and ducks, roaming through gardens bursting with spring delights.
I curled up in brand new Peter Alexander PJs. I did my nails.
I slept on super-soft pillows – like sleeping on clouds – in a big bed ALL to myself.
And I drank copious amounts of hot (yes, hot!) tea.
The only thing to distract me from my blissful state of relaxation was blue wrens flitting about in the pretty, blossom-clad trees, kookaburras laughing in the distance and the magnetising view of Mt Roland which was as ever-changing as the weather.
It’s not just Conrad — and his shaggy pals Clifford and Charlie — who make Mount Roland Country Lodge a special place, but also the human caretakers Karina Moore and Ian Graham.
They are passionate about sharing their little patch of Tassie, offering a boutique B&B accommodation/farm stay experience on the outskirts of Sheffield, in the foothills of stunning Mt Roland.
My tastebuds enjoyed the trip too – I woke each morning to the smell of freshly-baked muffins and a delicious parfait loaded with natural yoghurt and stewed fruit from the property’s orchard. Then there was fudge tasting at nearby Sheffield. Lollies from A Little Piece of Heaven at Campbell Town. And a stop at one of my favourite places, Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm.
I also picked up a takeaway bundle of cheese and boutique beers from Ashgrove to keep my boys at home happy. Because as much I loved some alone time, I was equally as thrilled to be welcomed home by toys on the floor and some big, squishy cuddles.
