Reaching New Heights

Reaching New Heights

Does your kid love to climb? Climbing is fantastic for a child’s development and it’s FUN! Here are our favourite parks for climbing:

COMMUNITY HUB, QUEENS DOMAIN

We went to this park on the very first day it opened and returned twice more that week as Hudson was so excited to keep exploring. We still visit regularly. Being able to scale giant boulders, a climbing wall and rope bridges is part of the fun of this nature-inspired play space.

Archer is still a bit small for some of the climbing structures but loves the dual slides, the nest swing and digging and splashing in the sand and water play area. The on-site pizza oven is also great for feeding hungry little tummies.

SIMMONS PARK & JOHN DOGGETT PARK

You’ve made it to the top of a towering maze of climbing ropes. So what better reward than rocketing back to ground-level via a giant metal tunnel slide? Hudson still needs a bit of help from Daddy Dinosaur to make it to the top but it won’t be long and he’ll be doing it all by himself.

There’s a large climbing structure with a slide at West Hobart’s John Doggett Park (pictured above) which is next door to the skate bowl. There’s a similar one at Lindisfarne’s Simmons Park.

CORNELIAN BAY & MONTROSE BAY FORESHORE

Both Cornelian Bay and Montrose Bay Foreshore (pictured above) have similar-looking climbing structures which Hudson enjoys testing his skills on. We enjoy the Glenorchy Art and Sculpture Park (GASP) walk along the foreshore at Montrose Bay too, while a walk behind the boat sheds at Cornelian Bay (followed by an ice-cream from the cafe) is also a great adventure for little people.

BLACKMANS BAY

It’s designed to resemble a giant eagle’s nest, with a series of wobbly ropes, ladders and baskets creating a 6m-high climbing challenge for adventurous kids. They’ll love the challenge of trying to make it to the top.

There’s also a smaller, wooden climbing structure – known as the Paradise Climbing Tree – a wooden see-saw and some barbecues. Read more HERE.

BELLERIVE BEACH PARK ALL ABILITIES PLAYGROUND

This is a fantastic fenced play area beside the water, with numerous swings, a merry-go-round, a water play area, a wooden shipwreck, and two 9m climbing towers – connected at the top by a suspended mesh tunnel – with an assortment of slides branching off in all directions which kids of all ages love.

The logs are also a hit with little climbers.

TYNWALD PARK, NEW NORFOLK

We were initially drawn to this park for its bike track with traffic lights which Archer and Hudson enjoy zooming around.

But the playgrounds here are also great for keeping both boys entertained for ages – one section has a climbing frame and a nest swing ideal for bigger kids, while the second play space with swings, a small slide and some colourful sensory equipment is easy for toddlers to navigate. It’s a lovely bush setting – the trees provide some welcome shade too. Plenty of grassy areas to kick a ball, too.
